Homographs and Homophones


Homographs and homophones describe words that have similar structures but different meanings.


Homographs are words with the same spelling but different pronunciations, derivations, or meanings. Examples of homographs include the following:


Bass (noun): an instrument with the lowest range in its group (e.g., a bass guitar)

Bass (noun): a fish


Bat (noun): a piece of sports equipment used to hit some type of ball

Bat (noun): a nocturnal flying mammal


Project (noun): a work task

Project (verb): to attribute one's personal thoughts and feelings to others


"Bass" and "project" are also heteronyms, which are words with the same spelling but different pronunciations and meanings.


Homophones are words that have the same pronunciation but different spellings, meanings, or derivations.


Read (verb): to interpret written words, signs, movements, or symbols

Reed (noun): a tall, slender plant that grows in wet areas like marshes

Reed (noun): a musical instrument


"Reed" is also a homonym.


Write (verb): to use a utensil or apparatus to put words and other symbols on some type of surface with the goal of communicating something

Right (adjective): to be correct


Bizarre (adjective): something (like behavior) that is odd, strange, or unusual

Bazaar (noun): an outdoor shopping market
